Mnemba must be the nearest one can get to paradise! The island is completely private and once there, all you need do is relax. Mnemba Island could easily feature in our Luxury section, as the service and attention to detail if first class. However since there is no pool (although there is a coral-lined crystal clear sea a few steps from your veranda) and the rooms are open allowing natural air to flow, we have placed this in our Boutique section.
The style of this lodge is undoubtedly ‘barefoot luxury’ – with ten cottages made of banana leaf and thatch roofs spaced around its sandy shores. There is an open dining area and separate lounge area for relaxing. The food is excellent, renowned for the fresh seafood and the blend of Swahili and Eastern tastes with those attributed to Western palates. Of course, there is a fully stocked bar, and the East African “dawa” cocktail is always available.
The coral reefs around Mnemba Island are some of the best in the area for snorkeling and scuba diving. Activities offered free of charge include snorkeling, wind surfing, and scuba diving for qualified divers. Game fishing and scuba instruction are available at an extra cost, and there is a spa offering treatments.
