Meals on safari taste sensational. Our guests are consistently surprised how good the food is on an African safari with us. The lodges we select have modern hotel-style kitchens, a team of chefs, and superb cuisine. What surprises so many of our guests is the catering provided in the various tented camps!
Even though a fully-kitted kitchen in a seasonal tented camp or a fly camp is not possible, the food is excellent!
When Justin and his brother Damian started up and ran a mobile safari operation in Tanzania in the late 1980’s, their sister Richenda, a professional chef, planned the safari menus and trained all the mobile camp chefs, resulting in exquisite cuisine. Bread, cakes and muffins were freshly baked each day using no more than a tin box covered with coal as an oven! We prided ourselves on our healthy and ingenious food, garnished with home-made sauces, relishes and fresh herbs.
The food in the various camps today, the permanent camps, seasonal camps, and mobile tented camps is as nutritious and tasty as it was then. Meals are served in a large dining tent, with candles and fine wines at dinner – sometimes we choose to dine out under the stars with a barbecue over the campfire.
Outstanding training is also carried out for the other really lightweight mobile camps that we use, such as the various “fly camps” and the lightweight mountain camp on Mount Kilimanjaro! It is especially amazing to taste what is produced on Mt Kilimanjaro, when the cooks have hiked with a load for most of the day, set up their kitchen tent, and still manage to conjure up delicious dinners made with fresh ingredients in no time!
We can easily cater to special diets (and often do), including vegetarians, people who have special requirements due to religious reasons, allergies, or other reasons.
