Permanent Camps

Permanent tented camps and small lodges are fixed structures that invariably blend beautifully with their surroundings. Camps are built or incorporate some canvas and tentage and lodges are constructed of other local materials such as timber or stone. They vary widely in size, standard and the experience they offer. The camps often imbibe a more “outdoor” feel, with a campfire near the lounge, and subdued lighting.

The description here applies only to those camps and lodges in our boutique category. There are other more opulent camps and lodges that that undoubtedly belong in the luxury accommodation category.

Permanent camps and small lodges typically only have 8 or 9 tents or rooms, although some camps may have as many as 16 tents and some lodges may be even bigger. Larger properties are thoughtfully divided into smaller sections, each with dedicated dining and lounge areas to maintain a cozy atmosphere.

All have electricity (often solar powered), and private bathrooms with plumbed hot and cold running water for the shower and washbasins. Invariably there is a zone with free WIFI and some camps have a swimming pool, especially in the warmer areas. While our boutique accommodations don’t include air conditioning, they’re carefully designed with optimal airflow through spacious layouts and in hotter areas will have electric fans, ensuring comfort.

Permanent tented camps are not usually exclusive, and unless you are in a private wing, you are likely to meet other groups while staying there. Nevertheless with us you will have your own private vehicle and guide, and if you have booked a Premium Style safari, additionally your A Step Ahead guide will lead you on drives, walks or other activities while staying here, ensuring activities are varied and interesting.

Many permanent tented camps are situated in excellent locations, overlooking a waterhole, or with close access to an area where wildlife congregates, such as a river or source of salt.
